Pregnancy and Beyond

Here at Herts Family Chiropractic, we have a passion for helping women through pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Pregnancy is a wonderful chapter in a women’s life but it is also a time of great change for the body, including changes in posture, shape and weight. Many women are unaware that chiropractic treatments can be beneficial during pregnancy and after birth and sadly just put up with pain and discomfort.

Some of the common presentations are:

  • Lower back pain
  • Sacro-illiac joint pain
  • Hip pain
  • Sciatica
  • Upper back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Headaches
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heartburn/acid reflux
The aim of Chiropractic care is to gently and effectively balance the structures which will aid in you feeling relaxed, comfortable and relieved from those aches and pains. It can be a welcomed relief at a time when an expectant mother has limited options for pain relieving medication.

Is Chiropractic safe whilst I’m pregnant?

Chiropractic is extremely safe during pregnancy. Sarah has received specialist post graduate training for chiropractic care during pregnancy, and she uses gentle, carefully selected and specialised techniques to minimise any risk to you and your baby and that are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy. These include soft tissue massage, acupuncture (dry needling), spinal mobilisation, activator technique and sacro-occipital technique. A special “pregnancy pillow” that allows you to comfortably lie on your front without putting a strain on your “bump” or your chest is used to make the treatment experience as beneficial as possible. Exercises and lifestyle advice will be given to help make your pregnancy and labour the positive experience it should be.

Postnatal care

Sarah has first hand experience in knowing how the body adapts during pregnancy and the recovery it needs after labour and multiple births.

It is often not appreciated the transition a woman’s body goes through postnatally. After birth and for many months after, your body will undergo a huge amount of change as it recovers from the pregnancy and labour. Pregnancy hormones will still be floating around, the pelvic floor will be tender and core muscles will have been stretched, leaving everything a bit unstable. New pressures on your back, neck and shoulders from simply carrying your baby or positions during feeding can also occur and these will be taken into consideration, discussed and treated as required too.

Chiropractic postnatal care aims to minimise pain and discomfort that you may be experiencing with adjustments and soft tissue release, similar to prenatal care. The ultimate goal is to restore balance to your spine and nervous system and rebuild your strength with specific exercises to get you back to the way you were feeling before having your child.

Here at Herts Family Chiropractic, many mothers find their postnatal treatments a real comfort and help due to Sarah’s warm and caring approach and her intuitive wisdom of the human body. This period, aside from the physical transitions, can be extremely emotional for women so to get relief from pain in a caring and supportive environment is often welcomed.

Sarah has built up close relationships with Hypnobirthing leaders and doulas, pregnancy pilates and yoga instructors, pregnancy massage therapists and core restore instructors in the local Hertfordshire area, so you can feel assured you will be fully supported in your pregnancy journey and beyond. Sarah’s mission is to build a much needed relationship with the midwifes and GP’s in the local area to raise awareness and promote better care for women both during pregnancy and after care following birth through Chiropractic care.
